So, here are the top newspaper headlines making waves across Nigeria today, 19th August 2026.

1. Cement manufacturers are under the searchlight of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, FCCPC, over the skyrocketing prices of cement, the agency has confirmed. It said the probe followed an extensive industry-wide investigation that suggested possible manipulation of product prices in the Nigerian market.

2. The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has criticised the President Bola Tinubu administration over rising food prices, saying the latest inflation reports indicate that the President and his government have no solution to the cost-of-living crisis. In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the Tinubu government had “run out of ideas”, adding that the government’s current approach, which tends to focus only on core inflation figures, does not prioritise the daily struggles of Nigerians.

3. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has narrated how he rejected an attempt by the then governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to become his running mate, saying he opposed a Muslim-Muslim ticket in the interest of the country. In a Hausa-language video interview shared on X, Atiku disclosed how some elders approached him after he secured the presidential ticket, seeking to persuade him to accept Tinubu as his running mate.

4. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has said he would have gone to Osun State to help the All Progressives Congress, APC, secure victory in the governorship election if President Bola Tinubu had wanted the party to win the poll “at all costs.” Wike made the statement on Tuesday while speaking with journalists during an inspection of flood-prone areas in Maitama, Abuja.

5. More than 23 people have been killed in the Binper community, Bwai District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State by suspected bandits. The attack happened less than a week after three people were killed in the area, with the Fulani and the Mwaghavul communities trading blames.

6. Suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Monday night attacked Gaya community in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State, killing a police inspector and seven civilians. The Chairman of Hong Local Government Council, Aliyu Sa’ad, confirmed the attack on Tuesday.

7. Panic broke out at the Federal Secretariat Complex in Awka, Anambra State on Tuesday after a fire gutted part of a building housing the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria and an adjoining store occupied by a pharmaceutical company. The fire, which reportedly started around 3 pm, destroyed office equipment and documents before it was brought under control.

8. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has dismantled an international cocaine-trafficking cartel that allegedly used Nigeria as a transit hub for moving illicit drugs to the United Kingdom, other parts of Europe and Asia. The agency also arrested the alleged Nigerian arrowhead of the syndicate, a self-styled luxury goods dealer and social media influencer, Afolabi Kazeem Michael, popularly known online as ‘KC Luxury’, as he attempted to flee the country.

9. President Bola Tinubu had a closed-door meeting with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja. Journalists observed Akpabio’s official S-Class Mercedes-Benz sedan pull up at the forecourt of the President’s office at exactly 6:12 pm on Tuesday. The reason for the closed-door meeting is yet to be ascertained.

10. Presidential candidates and national chairmen of major political parties on Tuesday signed the first National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections in Abuja. The accord was signed on behalf of President Bola Tinubu by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, alongside the All Progressives Congress National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda.
