Glamtush reports that President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, on their 3-1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
This is contained in a statement issued by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga on Thursday.
In a statement, the President described the team’s qualification for the final as a remarkable achievement that has brought immense pride and joy to millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.
Tinubu also commended the coaching crew and everyone whose hard work and support contributed to the team’s successful campaign.
As the Flamingos prepare to face Japan in the final, the President urged the players to remain focused, confident and determined, assuring them of the prayers, goodwill and unwavering support of Nigerians.
“I encourage you to approach the final with the same fighting spirit and belief that have brought you this far. I have confidence in your ability to make history by winning the coveted world title.
“I call on all Nigerians to rally behind the young ambassadors of the nation, whose achievements continue to showcase Nigeria’s sporting excellence and inspire a new generation of girls to pursue their dreams uninhibited.
“Once again, Nigeria is proud of you. Go for the trophy, Flamingos!” he added.
The Flamingos reached the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time after defeating Brazil 3-1 in their semi-final encounter in Morocco.
The Nigerian girls produced a spirited second-half performance, scoring three goals before Brazil grabbed a late consolation.
Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute, finishing off an assist from Oluwakemi Adegubyi to give Nigeria the lead.
The Flamingos doubled their advantage in the 71st minute when Awawu Bashiru found the net, with Joseph providing the assist.
Bashiru struck again in the 80th minute to make it 3-0, converting a pass from Oluebube Umejiaku as Nigeria took firm control of the encounter.
Brazil pulled one back in the 89th minute through Greise Kelly, assisted by Yasmin Queiroz, but the goal came too late to prevent Nigeria from securing victory and a place in the final.
