“Unmasking The Truth” Uncovers Corruption Affecting Women And Girls

In Nigeria, petty corruption, death of unborn babies, sexual extortion, and paying for bribes in exchange for public services like job opportunities and healthcare are some of the heavy burdens women experience daily.

Corruption in Nigeria has worsened despite the government’s effort to fight fraud and bribery.  In 2021, Nigeria was the 26th most corrupt country out of 180 countries. Millions of Naira allocated for rural development are stolen and misused by corrupt officials under the guise of executing public services. These actions make more women poor as they find it difficult to survive in a system characterized by bribery and political largesse.

“Unmasking the Truth” is a radio programme on how corruption affects marginalized Women and Girls.  It discusses everyday corruption women face and practical ways to fight against corruption.

The programme has commenced on six radio stations across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones – Sobi 109.1FM Ilorin for North Central, Dan Dal Kura 98.9FM Borno for North East, Garkuwa 95.5FM Sokoto for North West, Darling 107.3FM Imo for South-East, Premier 89.9FM Akwa Ibom for South-South and Women Radio 91.7 FM Lagos/Ogun for South West.

“Unmasking The Truth” is broadcast in Hausa, Yoruba, Pidgin and English. The radio programme commenced on Monday, March 21 and will continue on these stations on the first Monday of every month.

“Unmasking The Truth” is an initiative of St Ives Communications in partnership with Voice of Women and supported by the MacArthur Foundation.
