In Nigeria, petty corruption, death of unborn babies, sexual extortion, and paying for bribes in exchange for public services like job opportunities and healthcare are some of the heavy burdens women experience daily.
Corruption in Nigeria has worsened despite the government’s effort to fight fraud and bribery. In 2021, Nigeria was the 26th most corrupt country out of 180 countries. Millions of Naira allocated for rural development are stolen and misused by corrupt officials under the guise of executing public services. These actions make more women poor as they find it difficult to survive in a system characterized by bribery and political largesse.
“Unmasking the Truth” is a radio programme on how corruption affects marginalized Women and Girls. It discusses everyday corruption women face and practical ways to fight against corruption.
