1. Tragedy struck in Enugu on Saturday as a petrol tanker exploded at the Ugwuonyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, killing no fewer than 18 people, including three children. Thirteen others were rescued, according to a statement signed by the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, Olusegun Ogungbemide.

2. Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Saturday cautioned impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa against heating up the polity with his claim to a seat from which he was removed by majority lawmakers. Obasa, had denied allegations of corruption leveled against him, describing them as baseless and politically motivated. He insisted that he remains the Speaker.

3. The Senate has postponed the resumption of plenary session from January 28 to Tuesday, February 4, 2025. This was contained in a statement in Abuja by the Clerk of the Senate, Andrew Nwoba.

4. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has given the green light to the promotion of approximately 900 officers. The commission also reinstated life and property insurance for its operatives. EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, revealed this at the commission’s 2024 Rewards and Recognition ceremony in Abuja on Saturday.

5. Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 election, has criticised the present administration, saying there are more “Yahoo people” in government than those outside. Obi said this in his keynote address as guest speaker at the 4th graduation ceremony of Nexford University.

6. In a series of separate attacks, suspected bandits have abducted 22 residents from Kugauta and Kitanda, both within Kumana Chiefdom of Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State. A resident and student pastor, Emmanuel Johnson, disclosed to reporters on Saturday that the attacks occurred around 10:30 pm on Friday.

7. Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have recovered five AK-47 rifles, 552 rounds of live ammunition, Improvised Explosive Devices and no fewer than eight motorcycles from six suspected terrorists in Imo State. In a statement issued on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said three of the attackers were members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra/Eastern Security Network.

8. Gunmen have reportedly killed Prof. Emeka Chukwuma, a lecturer at the Delta State University, Abraka. It was gathered that Chukwuma returned to his home town, Umueji in Asaba, the Delta State capital on Friday for his usual weekend when the assassins killed him in his house. Sources said the 56-year-old professor usually comes home every weekend in Asaba.

9. The Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State has sealed off a popular mosque called ”Mosalasi Alhaja’ over a leadership dispute following the demise of the Chief Imam. The Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Chief Ganiyu Egunjobi, issued the directive in a statement on Saturday.

10. Defence Headquarters says troops have in the last one week, neutralised a notorious terrorist commander, and gun runner identified as Abu Mosaje in Plateau and 96 other terrorists across the country. This is contained in a statement by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, on Friday in Abuja.
