Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines Today – 2nd June 2026

 

So, here are the top newspaper headlines making waves across Nigeria today, 2nd June 2026.

 

1. Nigerian Navy has become a critical pillar in protecting and sustaining the nation’s economic growth, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said on Monday. He commended the Service for its role in securing the country’s maritime assets and boosting national revenue.

2. Former Northeast Vice Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Babachir David Lawal, launched a scathing attack on presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar on Monday. He described Atiku as unfit to be president, alleging that he “rigged” the party’s primary.

3. A notorious bandit leader, Kachallah Muhammad, has established communication with relatives of the abducted retired senior military officer, Major General Rabe Abubakar Batsari, Daily Trust learnt on Monday. Sources said the bandit kingpin, who operates in parts of Katsina State, opened a line of communication with the family of the retired General on Monday morning.

4. Cholera outbreak has killed more than 40 people and infected over 3,000 in 139 communities across seven local government areas of Borno State, Daily Trust gathered. This, according to government estimates, was recorded in Maiduguri, Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala and Magumeri, between 1st to 28th of May, 2026.

5. Parents of 42 pupils abducted from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State have accused the Federal Government of neglect, alleging that authorities have shown greater urgency in responding to a similar abduction in Oyo State. Their complaints come as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s high-powered delegation visited affected communities in Oyo State, where gunmen abducted dozens of pupils and teachers on May 15.

6. At least two Niger Republic nationals and three other masterminds linked to the abduction of school children in Papiri, Niger State, have been arrested by operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS. The operatives also recovered a large cache of arms, including 15 AK rifles and 1,434 rounds of live ammunition from them.

7. Following the abduction of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar, and his wife in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State on Saturday by suspected terrorists, defence headquarters has ordered the deployment of intelligence assets, saying troops were working round the clock to rescue the senior officer.

8. The Federal Government has directed Ministries, Departments and Agencies to immediately discontinue the practice of placing civil servants on what is commonly referred to as a mandatory three-month pre-retirement leave, declaring that such a provision does not exist in the Public Service Rules. The directive was contained in a circular issued by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack.

9. The Central Bank of Nigeria has redeployed its four Deputy Governors in a management reshuffle aimed at strengthening its leadership structure and improving operational efficiency. The changes, which took effect on June 1, 2026, were reflected in an updated profile on the apex bank’s official website on Monday.

10. A man, identified simply as Success, has reportedly died from injuries sustained after being tortured by some operatives of an Ogun State security outfit, So-Safe Corps, along Coca-Cola Road, in the Oju-Ore area of the state. It was learnt on Monday from a Facebook post by Ota Gossip that the incident occurred after an altercation between Success and his mother on Saturday.
