Lagos has acquired 24 train cars to boost it’s Red Rail Line fleet.

Glamtush reports that the Lagos State Government said it has acquired a new set of 24 train cars to strengthen operations on the Lagos Red Line and expand capacity to improve commuter experience along the corridor.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is currently in China with top management officials of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) Ministry of Transportation, released the pictures of the additional rolling stock on his Instagram page.

The governor said that as the state deepens investment in rail based transportation, the train would enhance service delivery and reduce waiting time for passengers.

“We have received a new set of 24 car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet. This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians. We remain focused on building a transport system that is efficient and reliable for everyone.”

The Red Line, which was inaugurated in February 2024, is a 37 kilometre rail corridor stretching from Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo on Lagos Island axis.

The line runs through key districts including Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin and Yaba, providing a critical mass transit alternative across designed as part of Lagos’ broader rail master plan, the Red Line shares right of way with the Nigerian Railway Corporation standard gauge track and connects with the Lagos Blue Line at key interchanges, reinforcing the state’s vision of an integrated multimodal transport system.

The government said that the corridor had witnessed increasing patronage since its launch, driven by rising demand for faster and more predictable alternatives to road travel in a city long burdened by traffic congestion.

It further noted that the development was part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority to expand rail services and extend connectivity to more communities.

It stated that plans were underway to further extend the Red Line beyond its current terminals and integrate it with bus rapid transit and water transport systems.

The government also said that as the state deepens investment in rail based transportation, the train would enhance service delivery and reduce waiting time for passengers.
