The World Cup round of 16 begins on Saturday.

Glamtush reports that the FIFA World Cup 2026 enters the Round of 16 this weekend with heavyweight clashes, potential upsets and a place in the quarterfinals at stake.

Traditional powers Brazil, France, England, Spain, and Portugal remain in the hunt, while Morocco, Norway and Paraguay continue their surprise runs.

The World Cup 2026 knockout phase reaches a major milestone today, Friday, July 3, as the Round of 32 concludes and the tournament prepares to enter the Round of 16.

The expanded 48-team format has delivered drama, surprise results, and several heavyweight clashes already, with the final Round of 32 fixtures deciding the remaining places in the last 16.

The final knockout matches on Friday will determine the last teams advancing to the Round of 16.

Round of 16 Begins Saturday

The Round of 16 gets underway on Saturday, July 4, with two blockbuster fixtures:

Saturday, July 4
Canada vs Morocco
Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia
1:00 PM EDT

Canada’s historic campaign faces its toughest test yet against a Moroccan side fresh from a dramatic penalty-shootout victory over the Netherlands. With both nations chasing a first-ever deep World Cup run, expect a fiercely contested opener to the Round of 16.

Paraguay vs France
Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
5:00 PM EDT

France arrive as one of the tournament favourites after dispatching Sweden 3-0, but Paraguay have already stunned Germany and will believe another upset is possible. The winner books a quarterfinal showdown with either Canada or Morocco.

Sunday, July 5
Brazil vs Norway
Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens
4:00 PM EDT

Five-time champions Brazil continue their title quest against a resilient Norwegian side that edged Ivory Coast in the previous round. Brazil remain among the favourites, but Norway have already shown they can frustrate more fancied opponents.

Mexico vs England
NRG Stadium, Houston
8:00 PM EDT

One of the standout ties of the Round of 16 sees England take on Mexico in a clash of footballing heavyweights. England survived a stern challenge from DR Congo, while Mexico comfortably overcame Ecuador.

Monday, July 6
Portugal vs Spain
AT&T Stadium, Arlington, Texas
3:00 PM EDT

A blockbuster Iberian derby headlines Monday’s action. Spain cruised past Austria, while Portugal edged Croatia in a hard-fought encounter. Few matches carry more history, rivalry and quality than this all-European showdown.

United States vs Belgium
SoFi Stadium, Los Angeles
8:00 PM EDT

The host nation faces one of Europe’s most talented squads in what promises to be one of the tournament’s most electric atmospheres. Belgium’s attacking firepower meets an American side eager to make home advantage count.

Tuesday, July 7
Winner of Argentina/Cape Verde vs Winner of Australia/Egypt
Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City
12:00 PM EDT

Argentina are expected to feature in this tie, but Cape Verde, Australia and Egypt all have dreams of upsetting the script. A quarterfinal place awaits the survivor.

Switzerland vs Winner of Colombia/Ghana
Lumen Field, Seattle
4:00 PM EDT

Switzerland secured their place after defeating Algeria, while Colombia and Ghana battle for the final available Round of 16 berth. This matchup could produce one of the tournament’s surprise quarterfinalists.

QUARTERFINAL PATH
Winner of Canada vs Morocco faces the winner of Paraguay vs France.
Winner of Brazil vs Norway faces the winner of Mexico vs England.
Winner of Portugal vs Spain faces the winner of the United States vs Belgium.
Winner of Argentina/Cape Verde-Australia/Egypt faces Winner of Switzerland-Colombia/Ghana.
The race for World Cup glory is now down to 16 teams. One bad night ends the dream; one great performance keeps the journey alive.

The Round of 16 will be a collision of football’s biggest names, brightest talents and most compelling storylines. From the Americas to Europe, Africa and Asia, the race for World Cup glory now rests in the hands of global superstars who have defined an era and those determined to create their own.

The spotlight will shine on icons such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, two legends chasing what could be their final shot at immortality, while a new generation led by Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior, Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal looks to seize the game’s biggest stage.

Former winners are chasing another chapter in history, emerging nations are hunting a breakthrough moment, and every match now carries the weight of legacy.

The World Cup’s biggest stars have arrived at the business end of the tournament — and only the very best will survive.
