Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines Today – Saturday, May 9, 2026

This daily compilation brings together the most talked-about stories across Nigeria’s leading media platforms, covering politics, economy, entertainment, sports, and more.

So, here are the top newspaper headlines making waves across Nigeria today, Saturday, May 9, 2026.

1. A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday granted an indefinite adjournment in a suit filed by an aggrieved chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Nafiu-Bala Gombe, challenging the legitimacy of the David Mark-led leadership of the party. Justice Emeka Nwite took the decision in a ruling after taking arguments from lawyers to the parties in the suit.

2. An attempt by some state governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remove their Imo State counterpart, Hope Uzodimma as chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, PGF, has hit the rocks. This follows the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in the disagreement that triggered the revolt against Uzodimma.

3. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has issued a warning that 19 states across the country may experience flash flooding in the coming days due to expected heavy early rains. In an advisory released on Friday NiMet explained that the flooding risk is heightened because dry and hardened soils will prevent water from soaking properly into the ground, leading to increased surface runoff.

4. Tragedy struck in Maiduguri after a police inspector, Abdulkadir Garba, was struck to death by lightning opposite the headquarters of the Borno State Police Command. The deceased officer popularly known as “Buratai,” was reportedly coordinating vehicle parking alongside a senior colleague, ASP Wazani Adamu, when the incident occurred at about 2:19 p.m.

5. The faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Kabiru Turaki has challenged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to carry out his threat of shutting down its operational office. This follows remarks made by Wike during his monthly media briefing earlier this week, where he questioned the legitimacy of the Turaki-led faction and demanded that the group operate openly if it truly existed.

6. Loyalists of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar have thrown their weight behind former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general election. The endorsement was announced on Friday in Abuja during a coalition meeting attended by members of the Obidient Movement, Kwankwasiyya Movement and the Coalition of Atiku Support Groups Initiative.

7. For the second time in less than two weeks, about seven armed hoodlums in the early hours of Friday invaded hostels occupied by students of the College of Engineering, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ibogun campus. The gunmen were said to have shot sporadically before dispossessing the students of their valuables, including a car and several mobile phones.

8. The Defence Headquarters says troops have neutralised scores of terrorists, arrested dozens of criminal suspects and rescued over 50 kidnapped victims in nationwide operations between April 30 and May 7. The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, disclosed this in a statement on ongoing military operations across various theatres on Friday in Abuja.

9. The Nigeria Labour Congress has called on the Congress of South African Trade Unions to lead a mass sensitisation campaign across South African communities to combat xenophobia and protect migrant workers. In a letter dated May 7, 2026, and addressed to the President of COSATU in Johannesburg, NLC President Joe Ajaero warned that South Africa could not claim to defend the working class while allowing African migrants to be hunted and killed.

10. Intensified joint security operations against banditry in Katsina State have resulted in the killing of five suspected bandits and the rescue of 32 kidnapped victims. The state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Katsina.
