So, here are the top newspaper headlines making waves across Nigeria today, 18th June 2026.

 

1. The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives on Wednesday called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to either refocus governance in tackling national security challenges and economic hardship or step aside, warning that Nigeria is facing what it described as deepening insecurity, judicial controversy, and democratic backsliding ahead of the 2027 elections.

2. Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has described the party’s newly introduced indemnity form against defection as a welcome development that reinforces constitutional provisions on party supremacy. Speaking through the Kwankwasiyya spokesperson, Habibu Saleh Mohammed, Kwankwaso said the initiative was in line with the Nigerian Constitution.

3. Gunmen on Tuesday killed the District Head of Gwande in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Saf Samuel Alaket, in an ambush attack along the Sha District axis bordering the Daffo community. Sources in the area said the incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m., while the traditional ruler was returning home after attending traditional council meeting in Bokkos.

4. The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed the Katsina State Police Command to intensify security around schools across the state as part of efforts to safeguard students, teachers and educational facilities from security threats. The directive was delivered by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of Finance and Administration, Sulaiman Abdul, during a two-day operational visit to Katsina State.

5. The Naira on Wednesday depreciated to N1,405 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,389 per dollar on Tuesday. Similarly, the naira depreciated to N1,361.5 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market, NFEM.

6. Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been acquitted of all bribery charges brought against her in the United Kingdom. A jury at Southwark Crown Court in London yesterday returned not-guilty verdicts on six counts, including five charges of accepting bribes and one count of conspiracy to commit bribery.

7. The International Federation of Women Lawyers, Rivers State branch, has rescued an infant who was abandoned at a shrine in Abua in the Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State. The Chairperson of FIDA in Rivers State, Tamunoibuemi Life-George, disclosed this while giving details of the rescue operation on Tuesday.

8. Officers of the Nigerian Navy Ship, Delta, have foiled a camouflaged crude oil storage site used to perpetrate crude oil theft activities in the creeks of the Niger Delta. The feat was performed by naval officers during an operation code-named “Delta Sentinel” following actionable intelligence on suspected crude oil theft activities around the Ugbokodo Creek axis of Delta State.

9. Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who resigned her membership of the ruling All Progressives Congress last week Monday, was on Wednesday officially received back into her former party, the Peoples Democratic Party. At a well-attended event held at the party secretariat in Abeokuta, the state chairman of the party, Dr Abayomi Tella, presented Obasanjo with the flag of the party, announcing her as its senatorial candidate for Ogun Central ahead of the 2027 elections.

10. The Federation Account Allocation Committee, FAAC, has shared a total sum of N2.3 trillion to the Federal, States and the Local Government Councils for the month of May, 2026. Mr Bawa Mokwa, Director, Press and Public Relations in the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation, OAGF, revealed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja.
