The woman was assisted by her son on the okada to the general hospital from Ita- Otu got stocked at Sowore for hours due to the resistance of the police officers at the checkpoint.

The deceased son said all their pleas to these officers fell on their deaf ears despite seeing the pregnant woman in noticeable labour pains. “They insisted we turn back despite our passionate appeals,” he stated.

It was gathered that the woman died at the police checkpoint while they were being questioned by the cops about why they were not wearing face masks and also not obeying the social distancing order of the state government.

It was after they discovered that the woman has lost consciousness that they allowed us.

‘And painfully, I lost my mother before she got to the hospital’ he cried.

The timely intervention of the local government transition chairman, Comrade Oluwafemi Onanuga, the Alarige of Ibiade, and the Ojotunmoro of Abigi doused the tension and the palpable crisis that would have erupted.

The protesting youth who carried the corpse to the police headquarters at Abigi was ready for a total showdown but the timely intervention of some notable indigenes and royal fathers of the communities calmed the situation.

Abimbola said three occupants on a motorcycle who violated the directive of the state government, were questioned on why they did not obey the sit-at-home order.

He added that they were asked to go when they informed the police at the checkpoint that the woman was being conveyed to hospital for delivery.

“Our officers were not responsible for the pregnant woman’s death. There were three occupants on a motorcycle as against the directive of the state government that only two people should occupy a motorcycle at a time.

“They were stopped and interrogated on why they did not obey the sit at home order. They informed the police that the woman was being conveyed to hospital for delivery, and having noticed that the woman was in pains, our men allowed them to proceed,” he said
