Four persons were on Saturday feared dead and several others injured in a road accident along the Iwo Road axis of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. This is just as four persons were injured and many others sustained injuries in a trailer crash in Yola, Adamawa State.

It was gathered that a grandmother and her two grandchildren were involved in the Oyo State crash which happened at Boluwaji Garage on Iwo Road.

An eyewitness said tragedy struck when a fuel tanker veered off the road and ran into a waiting crowd and two commercial vehicles.

Sunday PUNCH gathered that a young boy however escaped the accident as he fled to safety while the truck approached.

The Police Public Relations Officer, in the state, Gbenga Fadeyi, who confirmed the incident, said, “I have been informed that four people died in the accident. Our men are still there now trying to sort things out.”

In the Adamawa crash involving two trailers conveying humans and cattles along Mayo-Belwa and Ganye roads on Saturday, five persons were left dead and several others injured.

Speaking on the incident, Unit Commander, Federal Roads Safety Corps, Aminu Ibrahim, said the Mayo-Belwa accident was caused by the recklessness of the drivers involved in the crash.

He said the corpses of the five victims had been deposited at the Mortuary of the Cottage Hospital in Mayo-Belwa.

An eyewitness, Maajin Jingi, who spoke with journalists at the accident scene, said one of the trailer drivers tried to overtake another trailer at a bend, leading to both vehicles losing control in while trying to avoid collision.

Jingi said, “We saw two trailers heading in the same direction. They were trying to overtake each other. In the process, one of the drivers lost control. We only saw the drivers on the ground; three died instantly and many others sustained serious fractures with broken limbs and arms.’’

The Information Officer, Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area, Kabiru Baba-Kelly, said the accident which occurred at about noon on Saturday around Jimaa village could have been avoided.

He said, “It’s pathetic. The accident could have been avoided. The two trailer drivers were speeding during which one of the trailer skidded-off after losing control.

“Five dead bodies have been evacuated to the mortuary at the Mayo-Belwa Cottage Hospital and those who sustained injuries mostly youths on the trailers are also receiving treatment.”
