So, here are the top newspaper headlines making waves across Nigeria today, 7th Sept 2026.

 

1. Nigerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, says President Bola Tinubu and members of his family enjoy unimpeded transit and cannot be arrested in the United States while attending the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA. Ibrahim, who is also Chairman of the United Nations Committee on Budget and Administration, said this in a statement issued by the Office of the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations in New York.

2. Senator Shehu Buba, representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, has dismissed allegations and viral videos linking him to alleged bandit kingpins. Buba, who is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry and the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, governorship candidate in Bauchi State, has faced several accusations of aiding bandits.

3. Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate the alleged failure to account for N33.75 billion in cash transfers meant for vulnerable Nigerians. Falana also urged the anti-graft agency to work with the Auditor-General for the Federation, AuGF, to recover the funds if investigations establish that they were diverted.

4. Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday saw off ex-Sierra Leone President Ernest Koroma as he returned to his home country after Sierra Leone discontinued criminal proceedings against him. Jonathan disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Sunday, describing Koroma as his “dear friend and brother.”

5. Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel Emirate, three days after the death of his father. The announcement was made by the Secretary to the State Government, Bala Ibrahim, during a press briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Dutse, the state capital, on Sunday.

6. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested a convicted cocaine trafficker who allegedly disguised himself as an herbal tea businessman and intercepted a 20,000-litre fuel tanker fitted with a concealed compartment containing over two tonnes of cannabis. A statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Dunu Ebubechukwu, was arrested in a sting operation at Article Market, opposite Trade Fair Market, Ojo, Lagos, on Friday, September 4, 2026.

7. The Bursar of the National Open University of Nigeria, Nasiru Marafa, has reportedly been shot dead in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital. The university disclosed this in an official notice signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Ajayi, on Sunday.

8. The Bauchi State Police Command has foiled an armed robbery attempt along the Kajala-Kere Road and recovered two stolen motorcycles after suspected hoodlums fled the scene. The command also arrested a suspect in connection with the death of a 13-year-old boy who was allegedly shot after pulling the trigger of a loaded Dane gun in the Gamawa Local Government Area of the state.

9. The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State again on Sunday described the presidential ambition of Governor Seyi Makinde as a political drama script designed to entertain and distract the people, warning that all those behind it would be made to refund every kobo of state funds being wasted on it at the appropriate time.

10. A man identified simply as Basit, who had just returned to Nigeria from abroad for his wedding, has been beaten to death by a mob following an alleged hit-and-run incident in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State. It was learnt on Sunday that the incident occurred on Wednesday night. Basit allegedly hit a male resident with his car in the Patey area of the community.
