1. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said on Wednesday that governors are critical to food security and prosperity in the country. The President spoke when Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, paid him a New Year homage in his Ikoyi, Lagos residence. Tinubu reminded them that their leadership at the subnational level is central to achieving rapid national growth.

2. Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara on Wednesday boasted that he is still in power despite the protracted crisis rocking the state. He mocked the camp of his political opponents, saying he is still in possession of the red biro.

3. His Holiness, Pope Francis, yesterday advocated debt forgiveness for poor countries to enable the internationally indebted nations to come out of the woods and develop. Pope Francis said this in his 2025 World Day of Peace message with the theme: Forgive Us Our Trespasses, Grant Us Your Peace, sent out annually on January 1 to encourage peace in the world.

4. The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has condemned the federal government’s decision to exclude the North Central from its 2025 fiscal budgetary allocations to the regional commissions. Obi registered his displeasure with the federal government’s action in a tweet on his X handle.

5. The National Population Commission, NPC, says over 10 million children have been registered and offered birth certificates in the last three months. The Chairman of the commission, Alhaji Nasir Isa Kwara, stated this while speaking to journalists after the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, presented a birth certificate to the baby of the year in Asokoro general hospital, Abuja.

6. Kano State Government has strongly expressed opposition to the proposed tax reform bills before the National Assembly. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who spoke through his Deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, declared the government’s position during the New Year celebration. He said the reform bill is not the solution to Nigeria’s economic challenges.

7. Vice-President Kashim Shettima says Nigerians will smile and prosper in 2025, as the economy has turned the corner. He said this while addressing State House Correspondents after a visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos on Wednesday. According to him, the economy has started picking up, and in the coming weeks and months, Nigerians will start smiling.

8. The Police Command in Sokoto State has announced the arrest of 575 suspects for various crimes and the recovery of 142 items, including weapons in 2024. This is contained in a statement on Wednesday in Sokoto by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Ahmed Musa. Musa said the suspects comprised those involved in culpable homicide, rape, vandalism, drug abuse, theft, fraud, rustling, and robbery.

9. A tragic incident unfolded in the French Quarter of New Orleans, United States on Wednesday afternoon, when a vehicle ploughed into a crowded area, leaving 10 people dead and 30 others injured. The attack occurred on Bourbon Street, a popular tourist destination, when the vehicle sped through a dense crowd.

10. A yet-to-be-identified woman said to be in her early 70s has met her untimely death after a vehicle rammed into her at Jemi Alade Estate in the Isheri-Olofin area of Lagos State. It was gathered that the deceased and her friend were heading to their home in the estate, which is just some metres away, when a car that was in reverse knocked her down.
