Glamtush reports that a final-year student of the University of Benin simply known as Desmond was on Monday shot dead in his room at the Hall 3 Hostel by unknown gunmen in what appeared like a cult-related incident.
The late student popularly known as ‘Mayor’ was said to be in the Department of Public Administration and was shot at about 9 pm on Monday.
The incident caused panic among students. He was also said to be a Kegite chief before he was killed.
A student who pleaded anonymity said the deceased was shot in the face at point-blank range.
The student said, “The killing of Desmond has caused panic in the school. Students are even afraid to stay in the hostel. He was shot in the face and had no chance to survive the attack.”
It was gathered that his remains had been deposited in the mortuary at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson for UNIBEN, Benedicta Ehanire, who withheld the deceased’s name said “Mayor” was attacked in the university residence by an unknown gunman.
The spokesperson said the management is working closely with the “internal security units” in ensuring that the incident will not be repeated within the university’s premises.
“The management of the University of Benin has condemned the brutal and sad killing of a final year male student, known mostly as ‘mayor’ (real name withheld) on the night of Monday 3rd April 2023,” the statement said.
“The gruesome shooting occurred in one of the halls of Residence and was carried out by yet to be identified gunman.
“While commiserating with the family and colleagues of the late student, management enjoins other students to be calm as the Police, as well as other security agencies, are working hard to fish out and arrest the culprit.
“Management is also working closely with the internal security units in ensuring that such dastardly incident does not occur again within the university’s premises.”
