1. The acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Umar Damagum, has come under intense pressure from governors elected on the party’s platform to swear in Sunday Ude-Okoye as the National Secretary. A majority of the members of the National Working Committee have also urged Damagum to take steps to replace the embattled Senator Samuel Anyanwu with Ude-Okoye.

2. The Supreme Court yesterday dismissed Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s appeal against the judgment of the Court of Appeal asking him to represent the 2024 budget before Martin Amaewhule-led State House of Assembly. A five-member panel of the apex court dismissed the appeal marked SC/CV/1171/2024 after Fubara’s lawyer, Yusuf Ali (SAN), sought to withdraw it.

3. Exceptionally gifted children who are below 16 years will be allowed to take the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, its Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has said. Oloyede said the board would identify the few gifted students and allow them to take the university entrance examination.

4. After calling only one witness, Governor Monday Okpebholo yesterday closed his case before the Edo Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja. The petitioner, Asue Ighodalo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the September 21, last year governorship election, last week closed his case after calling 19 witnesses.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has directed that henceforth, “No operative should be seen carrying assault arms (rifles) while dressed in civilian attire (mufti).” He also issued a stern warning to all officers regarding serious breaches of human rights, emphasizing the duty of the Force to uphold these rights.

8. Winnie Byanyima, executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS, says global HIV infections could rise more than sixfold by 2029 if the US government halts funding for the world’s largest AIDS programme. Speaking to The Associated Press, AP, from Uganda, Byanyima said new HIV infections have declined in recent years, with 1.3 million cases recorded in 2023, a 60 per cent drop since 1995.

The Lagos State chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria has mourned the death of a 42-year-old e-hailing driver, Yusfat Ayinde, who was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants on Friday. The chairman, Jaiyesinmi Azeez, who confirmed the incident, told reporters on Monday that the deceased was on duty in the evening when he was attacked.

10. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has declared four individuals wanted for their alleged roles in a drug trafficking syndicate linked to Lagos drug kingpin, Alhaji Suleiman Ganiu, also known as Barryshine. Barryshine was arrested on August 26, 2024, two years after coming under the radar of the anti-narcotics agency.
