1. The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced daily nationwide protests and picketing of federal health institutions. In a notice issued on Saturday, the association which is currently on a nationwide indefinite strike said the protest will commence on Wednesday, 9th August at 10:00am.
2. The Senate on Saturday urged President Bola Tinubu, who is the Chairman of ECOWAS to adopt diplomacy in addressing the toppling of the democratic government in Niger Republic. Tinubu had in an official communication sent to the Senate on Friday sought the support of the parliament for the implementation of Resolutions of ECOWAS on the political situation in Niger Republic.
3. The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25 election, Atiku Abubakar, his running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa and some governors of the party, on Saturday met behind a closed door in Asokoro, Abuja. The meeting is suggested to be unconnected with the state of affairs in the party and what could be done to change its fortunes following the loss at the last election.
4. The Senate on Saturday announced that it would increase the number of Standing Committees. It, however, did not disclose the figure. The Senate also said it would name the committees and their chairmen on Monday. This was disclosed by the Majority Leader of the Senate, Opeyemi Bamidele.
5. Mr Adeniyi Sanni, a senior aide to the Senator representing Ogun West in the National Assembly, Solomon Adeola, has been shot dead. The spokesperson for the Senator, Kayode Odunaro, in a statement in Abuja said the incident happened on Saturday morning.
6. The Police Command in Lagos State has confirmed the arrest of three persons over the death of Dr Vware Diaso at the General Hospital in Lagos. The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on Saturday. Hundeyin, who did not mention the identities of the suspects, said that the police had begun an investigation into the case.
7. A ministerial nominee from Ogun State and an #ENDSARS protester, Dr Bosun Tijani, on Saturday, apologised to the Senate and Nigerians over past derogatory tweets.
Tijani made the apology while being screened by the Senate for a ministerial position.
8. The removal of subsidy and floating of the exchange rate are some of the disruptive changes Nigeria must go through, Anambra Governor Charles Soludo has said. In a statement by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Innovation and Business Incubation, Chinwe Okoli, Soludo asked youths to look up to opportunities in “these ongoing disruptive changes.”
9. The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has finally put to rest the Monday sit-at-home observed by people of the Southeast and in its place directed an Economic Empowerment Day (EED). Spokesman of IPOB, Emma Powerful, who disclosed this in a statement at the weekend, explained that EED is created by the IPOB leader to cushion the effects of the Monday sit-at-homes.
10. President of the World Bank, Ajay Banga, on Saturday commended President Tinubu for his early macro-fiscal reforms and commitment to stability. He assured that the World Bank would support Nigeria not only with financial aid but also with knowledge and guidance on regulatory and fiscal policies.
