1. Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, to shelve their proposed nationwide protest. In a letter addressed to the counsel for the NLC, Femi Falana, SAN, dated February 23, 2024, Fagbemi reminded the NLC of a subsisting order restraining the union from embarking on any industrial action.
2. Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested eight suspected armed robbers on its wanted list. The spokesperson for the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday. Hundeyin stated that the suspects, who belonged to two syndicates, were arrested after weeks of discreet and intense investigation.
3. Some yet-to-be-identified hoodlums have killed the President-General of Umuoji Community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Silas Onyima. Although the details of the incident are still sketchy, it was gathered that the hoodlums, numbering about 15, invaded the deceased’s home on Friday evening and shot him dead thereby throwing the community into panic.
4. The Nigeria Police, on Friday, arrested officers attached to the Special Tactical Squad in Abuja for extorting the sum of N30m from a member of the public. In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Friday, the police said the case was brought to their attention via X (formerly Twitter).
5. The presidency has confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will visit Qatar. This was contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in reaction to a leaked memo. He said the State Visit by Tinubu was on the invitation of the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
6. The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has lifted the economic sanctions imposed on Niger, Mali and Burkina-Faso. The lifting of the sanctions followed long hours of deliberations by the regional leaders at an extraordinary summit on the political, peace, and security situation in the sub region.
7. Bandits have killed one of the seven persons abducted from Kuduru community in the federal capital territory, FCT. The bandits stormed the area and abducted the victims on December 28, 2023. Source said that the victim, Olayinka Ogunyemi, was killed after members of the families of the hostages failed to pay the N290 million demanded.
8. Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, has stated that fuel subsidy was costing the federal government N400 billion monthly. President Bola Tinubu, had in his inauguration, declared the end of the fuel subsidy era.
9. Dr Kanu Agabi, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, says Nigeria’s judiciary is better than the legislature and the executive, saying it is the best arm of government in the country. Agabi stated this in Abuja on Saturday, at a book launch titled “Court and Politics” authored by Dr Umar Ardo, the former Special Adviser on Research and Strategy to former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar.
10. A fresh crisis is brewing in the All Progressives Congress, APC, over the election of the party’s candidate for the September 21, 2024, governorship election in Edo State. Dennis Idahosa, the first runner-up in the just concluded primary election, rejected the declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the party’s gubernatorial candidate.
