Last week, Sophie Theallet released an open letter urging fellow designers to join her in refusing to dress future First Lady Melania Trump. While the letter sparked a lot of conversation in the industry, no other designers have since spoke out on Theallet’s proposition—that is until last night when Tommy Hilfiger weighed in.
WWD reports that while at the Angel Ball in New York, the American designer said he was supportive of dressing Trump, “I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her.”
“I don’t think people should become political about it. Everyone was very happy to dress Michelle [Obama] as well. I think they look great in the clothes. You’re not gonna get much more beautiful than Ivanka or Melania.”
Hilfiger is the first designer to respond to Theallet’s stance on dressing the future First Lady, but perhaps his words inspire other American designers to join the conversation as well.
