Telemundo’s New Series The People’s Doctor: Synopsis, Actors And Characters

Telemundo’s new anthology series The People’s Doctor premieres on Monday, July 15 at 22h00, replacing Come Back To Me which ends the week before.

The original Telemundo series ‘El Doctor del Pueblo’ tells the story of José Gregorio Hernández (played by Adrián Matos), better known as ‘The Doctor of the People.’

It’s described as a faith-based series inspired by Venezuelan doctor José Gregorio Hernández, who was born in 1864 and went on became a popular hero in South America and with the Catholic Church.

Telemundo describes each episode of the series as presenting “an intensely spiritual journey on the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.”

Each story in this moving series is based on the real life and miracles of this doctor, philanthropist, and religious figure, who treated his low-income patients for free and was beatified by Pope Francis in 2021, a century after his death when the church attributed a miracle to him.

A 10-year-old girl was shot in the head during a robbery in 2017 and doctors said that she’d be permanently disabled if she lived.

According to Reuters, the church’s records state that her mother prayed to Hernández, asking for her daughter to be saved, and she recovered fully.

A second miracle needs to be attributed to him by the church for him to be recognised as a saint.

He died in 1919 at the age of 54 after being hit by a car.

José Gregorio Hernández is a beloved and popular figure in his native Venezuela and throughout Latin America, where many believers attribute their healings and miracles to him. The Doctor intervenes in the most challenging situations where family unity, communication, and love are put to the test. An unexpected miracle brings a life lesson to each story and paves the way for hope.

The series stars Adrián Matos as José Gregorio Hernández, the series also features well-known actors such as Checo Perezcuadra (Falsa Identidad), Luz Ramos (Preso No. 1), Hector Kotsifakis (Malverde), Erick Chapa (Enemigo Intimo), Leonardo Alvarez (El Señor de los Cielos), Christian Ramos (Vuelve a Mí), Gabriel Porras (El Señor de los Cielos, La Reina del Sur), Clementina Guadarrama (Roma), Eligio Meléndez (Un Extraño Enemigo, La Gran Seducción), Cecilia Tousssaint (Madre de Alquiler) and Gaby Rivero (Amor Divino), among others.
