The Super Falcons on Tuesday beat South Africa 2-1 to qualify for the WAFCON final.
Glamtush reports that the Super Falcons of Nigeria on Tuesday booked their spot in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco after a dramatic 2-1 win over South Africa in a tense semi-final clash.
Nigeria came close to scoring in the opening 12 minutes through Chiwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo. Ihezuo was set up by a superb pass from Ashleigh Plumptre in the 11th minute, but South Africa goalkeeper Andile Dlamini produced a superb save to deny the striker. Dlamini also stopped Okoronkwo’s goal-bound effort one minute later.
The match, played with high intensity, saw the Super Falcons take the lead in the first half through Rasheedat Ajibade, who calmly converted from the penalty spot in the 45th minute to give Nigeria a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
Earlier in the game, South Africa was forced into a substitution in the 26th minute after striker Hildah Magaia was withdrawn due to injury, with Thubelihle Makhubela coming on in her place.
South Africa came out stronger after the first half, putting sustained pressure on the Falcons’ defence and dominating the early exchanges. Their efforts were rewarded in the 56th minute when they earned a penalty, following a foul by Osinachi Ohale, who was penalized for pulling down a South African attacker in the box in the 60th minute when Linda Motlhalo converted a penalty to make it 1-1.
Michelle Alozie struck in the 90+4th minute after a setup from Esther Okoronkwo, sealing a dramatic win for the Falcons.
The victory sees Nigeria book a place in the WAFCON final, continuing their dominance on the continental stage and putting them within reach of another title.
