Dear Angela,
I have been married for 11 years without a child. And the truth is that I have never been pregnant in my life either before or after marriage until I was raped by one of the armed robbers who invaded our compound in the presence of my husband on that awful day.
It is an experience me and my husband tried for days to put behind us. However, three weeks later, I took ill and thought it was the usual malaria. But when I visited the hospital for proper test and check-up, I was told that I am pregnant.
I didn’t know whether to jump for joy or kill myself. When I gave the ‘good’ news to my husband, he bluntly told me to have an abortion. It sounded like the best solution to forget about that horrible day but after thinking about it, I decided that I was going to keep the pregnancy.
My husband is threatening to throw me out of his house and life if I don’t abort the pregnancy. According to him, he cannot father the child of an armed robber. He has not even touched me since the incidence. I understand his plight but what about me? I have been trying to get pregnant for 11 years without success and now that I am, he wants me to get rid of it. Yes, I was raped but does that mean I must get rid of the pregnancy? What if I lost my life in the process or never get pregnant again? I love my husband and want to save my marriage but I also have to think of my life and future. Please I need advice.
Confused wife.
Dear confused wife,
This is a very serious matter at hand. But is any member of your family aware that you were raped or even in the know of what you are going through? Are you both certain the pregnancy belongs to the rapist? What if you were already pregnant before the incidence without knowing?
Well, my advice is that you should do a comprehensive test. But if your husband is still insisting on the abortion, involve the elders in both families. Better still, seek counsel from your spiritual leaders like your pastor or imam.
She sincerely needs your advice. So please read and leave your comment or advice in the comment box below.
