Savills estate agents have suspended an employee after he hurled racist abuse at England’s players on social media.
Recall that the Three Lions lost in the final of Euro 2020 on penalties to Italy, with Bukayo Saka missing the decisive kick.
Savills signalled their intent to launch an investigation and have subsequently suspended the individual in question.
A statement read: “Savills confirms that the staff member connected with the racist comments placed on Twitter claims that his Twitter account was taken over by a third party and that the matter is being referred to the Greater Manchester Police.
“Savills has acted swiftly and confirms the individual is suspended from duty pending the findings of this investigation, which is being progressed as a priority.”
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed from 12 yards, with the latter’s failure to score sealing victory for the Azzurri.
The trio were later subjected to abuse on social media.
One of those who appeared to target the England stars works for Savills, according to his Twitter bio, although he has since changed it and deleted the racist tweet.
The estate agent has come out this morning and said: “Savills is committed to eliminating discrimination and encouraging diversity amongst our workforce. A full investigation will be carried out in regards to this unacceptable incident.
“Savills abhors and has zero tolerance to any form of racism and racial discrimination and is appalled by the racist comments in these tweets. Savills is immediately investigating and will take appropriate action”
The FA were quick to condemn the incident, insisting they were “appalled” before saying: “We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team.
“We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.
“We will continue to do everything we can to stamp discrimination out of the game, but we implore government to act quickly and bring in the appropriate legislation so this abuse has real life consequences.
Gareth Southgate also offered his support, saying: “It’s just not what we stand for.
“We have been a beacon of light in bringing people together, in people being able to relate to the national team, and the national team stands for everybody, and so that togetherness has to continue.”
