Glamtush reports that Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has received the Federal Government of Nigeria letter of approval for the construction of the Lekki airport.
This online platform understands that the presentation was made on Tuesday by Aviation Minister, Hadi Sirika on behalf of the Federal Government at the Ehingbeti Lagos Economic Summit 2022, held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.
Sirika expressed confidence that the new airport will link Nigeria to the world, and open Lagos to more international economic partnerships.
Work on the facility is expected to begin in 2023 and would be constructed on 3,500 hectares of land on the Lekki-Epe corridor.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, disclosed this in a tweet.
Gawat wrote, “The Governor of Lagos State, Mr @jidesanwoolu officially receives the Federal Government Approval for the Lekki Epe Airport today at the Lagos Economic Summit, Ehingbeti 2022 at the Eko Hotel and Suites.
“Hon. Minister of Aviation, @hadisirika explains the importance of the Lekki-Epe Airport. He says Lagos is very significant to the economy of the country and that the current Murtala Muhammed Airport is already congested.
“Governor of Lagos State, Mr @jidesanwoolu says there is a lot more positive “breaking news” to come at the Lagos Economic Summit, #Ehingbeti2022 and Lagosians should watch out.”
Presenting the approval to Sanwo-Olu, Sirika said, “In the name of God the most merciful, we in the Civil Aviation Ministry are pleased to issue out this approval to Lagos State. May it be a vision to Lagos, to its people, its future, its fortune, the country, and to humanity.”
Last week, Ope George, Special Adviser to Governor on Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) announced the Nigerian government’s approval.
George also confirmed that the master plan and aeronautical designs were already in place.
Studies are ongoing about strategies and funding, after which the project will be taken to the marketplace, he added.
Retired Group Captain John Ojikutu said he was elated about the Lekki airport, recalling its conception more than decade ago.
The aviation expert revealed that the project came to light during the tenure of former Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola, the incumbent Works and Housing Minister.
