Robbers raided a bureau de change, office at Sakpoba Road, Benin, Edo State and allegedly carted away over N12 million at the weekend.
It was learned that the robbers, who dressed like men of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, trailed one of the traders, who went to the bank to withdraw money to the office. So, spotting men dressed in SARS uniform, people around thought they were men from the SARS, who escorted the victim back to his office from the bank.
However, there was pandemonium when the robbers started shooting sporadically into the air after they robbed the victim of about N9 million and another victim of N3 million.
One of the Bureau De Change men, Alhaji Haruna, said each time armed robbers attacked them the police would never come to their rescue until the robbers had left.
Policemen, who arrived after the robbers had escaped, were booed by angry traders and sympathisers, for coming late.
The police spokesman in the state, Stephen Onwuchei, said he was not in town to have details of the incident.
