1. Benue State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Berg Afled Emberga, representing Makurdi North Constituency, as its new Speaker. Emberga replaced Hon. Aondona Dajoh, who resigned on Sunday afternoon amid a week-long leadership crisis that rocked the Assembly.

2. The troops of 6 Division, Nigerian Army, have destroyed nine illegal refineries, confiscated 32,000 litres of stolen petroleum products, and arrested 69 suspected oil thieves in the Niger Delta region. The Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, confirmed the development, saying troops intercepted two trucks loaded with over 15,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil in Delta.

3. At least six people have died, while three others are missing, following a boat accident in the Garin Faji area of Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Sokoto State, as residents fled an attack by suspected bandits. It was learnt that the tragedy occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 21, marking the second time of such an incident in less than a week.

4. Troops of the Nigerian military attached to Operation Hadin Kai have bombed over 30 terrorists while attempting to cross into Nigeria from the Cameroon border. It was learnt that the terrorists had converged near the Nigeria-Cameroon border around Kumshe in Borno State in the early hours of Saturday with a view to attacking ground troops situated at the location and penetrating the country.

5. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to transfer the sum of N32.7 billion and $445,000—recovered from officials of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development—to the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA) for proper use.

6. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) forecasts rainy and thundery conditions across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday. Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected over parts of the northern states, including Jigawa, Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Bauchi, Yobe, and Katsina, starting Monday morning, with afternoon rains extending to Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba.

7. Three operators – Dangote Petroleum Refinery, Aiteo and AA Rano – weekend, adjusted the depot prices of Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, also known as petrol to N823 per litre from N821 per litre as crude oil rises to $67 per barrel from $65 per barrel in the international market.

8. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Sunday urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara States following a wave of violent attacks that have claimed over 140 lives in the past two months. The party described the killings as a clear indication of a total collapse in Nigeria’s security architecture and criticised the Federal Government’s handling of the crisis.

9. Operatives of the Nasarawa State Police Command attached to the Doma Division have arrested a notorious kidnap kingpin, Mohammed Bammi (Zomo) of Yelwa village. The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Sunday in Lafia, the state capital.

10. The Police Command in Akwa Ibom says it has detained for prosecution four suspected illicit drug dealers in Uyo. The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Uyo on Sunday. John said the Operatives of the command, based on credible information, conducted a series of raids on several suspected illicit drug black spots with Uyo at approximately 10 p.m. on August 18.
