1. Over 200 terrorists have been killed by security operatives in Niger State in the last four days. The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Internal Security, Emmanuel Umar, who made this known during a briefing on the security situation in the State, said four bandits’ groups have been operating in the State.
2. President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the sum of $8.5 million to evacuate at least 5,000 Nigerians who are stranded as a result of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
3. The Indigenous People of Biafra has accused the Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, of setting up the Ebubeagu security outfit as a militia group to carry out odd jobs for him. The group berated the Governor for allegedly denying the activities of Ebubeagu in the State when he was questioned about it recently.
4. Gunmen, on Wednesday afternoon, shot dead a tax collector and three other people at Imande Kundi village in Mbacher Council Ward of Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State. Villagers said the murderers are members of the late criminal kingpin, Terwase Akwaza, popularly known as “Gana” who was killed by the military in 2020.
5. A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Attahiru Jega, on Wednesday, called on Nigerian workers to, as a matter of urgency, wake up and rescue the country from “a few reckless elites in control of the governance process who are running the country aground”.
6. Students from Tertiary Institutions in Ondo State led by the National Association of University Students, NANS, on Wednesday, shut down the popular Akure/Ilesha highway while protesting the ongoing strike by ASUU. The blockade generated heavy vehicular traffic along the highway, with numerous heavy-duty trucks and passenger buses stranded on their way to and from Abuja, Lagos, as well as Benin.
7. The Christian Association of Nigeria has said that the 2023 general elections may not be credible. This is as the association, in a statement by the CAN President, Rev Dr Samson Ayokunle, described security challenges, occasioned by the criminal activities of terrorists, bandits and kidnappers in the country, as the “biggest threats” to the 2023 elections.
8. Controversy has surrounded the death of suspected lovers inside a vehicle along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday. According to eyewitnesses, the lovers died while having sex inside a Toyota Sienna vehicle around the NASFAT area of Mowe-Ibafo axis of the expressway. However, the police denied the claim, saying the man killed his lover and committed suicide.
9. Ukraine has offered to waive visa requirements for foreigners who assist in its fight against Russian troops. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has already authorised a decree that would allow foreigners to help his country in the ongoing war.
10. The Federal Government has granted a waiver from pre-departure Covid-19 protocols for Nigerian returnees from Ukraine. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) said the approval was granted by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on Covid-19.
