Glamtush reports that Nigerian activist, Fawaz Alabi has drowned at the Ibeshe beach in Lagos

This online new platform understands that he went to the beach on Salah day, April 10, to celebrate with friends but went missing during the outing.

His body was recovered Friday, April 12, on the shores of Ibeshe beach in Lagos.

The post reads, “Omo @lengdrxx body was found on the shores of Ibeshe beach. He’s been missing since Salah day. He was a very good friend, vocal leader, original Lagos boy. May Allah forgive all his shortcomings.

Further details emerged from the post, revealing that Fawaz had been at Ibeshe beach on Eid day, but the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and subsequent drowning remained unclear.

The post added, “He was at Ibeshe beach on day. We’re still trying to get more info. But we were told his body has been identified. We’re trying to reach those that they went together but they’ve been unreachable.”

Fawaz Alabi, 34, was a respected figure in the activist community, renowned for his dedication to social justice and his role in several high-profile campaigns against pollution and government corruption in Nigeria. His sudden demise has left both colleagues and admirers in profound shock.

Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning, with initial reports suggesting that strong tidal conditions may have been a factor.

The community has begun to mourn the loss of Alabi, with tributes pouring in from across the nation. A vigil is planned on Ibeshe Beach to honour his memory and legacy, which has indelibly shaped advocacy and activism in the region.

Fawaz Alabi is survived by his parents and two sisters, who, through a family spokesperson, expressed their grief and requested privacy as they navigate this painful period. They plan to establish a foundation in his name to continue his work in human rights and environmental protection.

As the community reels from this loss, the reminder of the unpredictability of natural waters and the need for caution even in familiar settings has been starkly underscored.

Friends have taken to X platform to mourn him.
