NBA Calls For Due Process In Rivers Political Crisis

The NBA has called for due process in the ongoing Rivers political crisis.

Glamtush reports that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a stern warning to politicians in Rivers State, urging them to refrain from dragging the judiciary into their political disputes.

During a joint press briefing, the chairmen of the eight NBA branches in Rivers State emphasized that the judiciary is an independent arm of government and must remain free from political interference.

They stressed that the only body constitutionally empowered to handle disciplinary matters involving judges is the National Judicial Council (NJC).
Any attempt to bypass the NJC and involve security agencies in the investigation of judicial officers, they warned, would set a dangerous precedent and undermine the rule of law.

The chairmen called on the Rivers State House of Assembly to reconsider its resolution directing the Department of State Security (DSS) to investigate the Chief Judge, urging them to allow the NJC to handle the matter in line with established legal procedures.

The NBA chairmen also appealed to all parties involved in the Rivers political crisis to prioritize the interests of the state and its people. They highlighted the critical role Rivers State plays in Nigeria’s economy and warned that further escalation of the crisis could lead to a breakdown of law and order, with devastating consequences for the entire nation.

The chairmen urged political actors to embrace dialogue and peaceful resolution, emphasizing that the judiciary must remain impartial to uphold justice and the rule of law.

They called on all stakeholders to work together to restore peace and stability in Rivers State, reminding them that the judiciary is the last hope of the common man and must be protected from intimidation, blackmail, or political pressure.
