The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has henceforth placed a ban on congratulatory messages and media advertorials for legal practitioners who are newly admitted into the rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, (SAN).
The directive was given by the NBA President, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), in a letter addressed to the 21 lawyers selected for the conferment of the award this year dated September 7.
Alegeh disclosed that the decision to ban congratulatory advertorials for new SANs was a resolution of the NBA National Executive Committee. He added that the practice, which had gone on for years, infringed on the provisions of Rule 39 (2) of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners, 2007.
He advised the newly selected SANs to deter their families, friends and well-wishers who may want to congratulate them on the pages of newspapers, radio or television.
