Glamtush reports that after achieving H1 2023 milestone performance, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) under the leadership of Muhammad Nami in a bid to educate and enlighten the general public, yesterday, trained over 100 Cvil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) on tax matters in Nigeria.
This online News platform understands that the event tagged, “Education And Enlightenment of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) And Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) On Tax Matters” held in Lagos aimed at educating the participants which are closer to the people on tax technicalities, mobilization and the benefits of filing tax returns for the development of our country, Nigeria.
Speaking during the training, Mr. Johnannes O. Wojuola, Special Assistant (Media) to the Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) noted that the importance of tax payment by the citizenry into the government coffers cannot be overemphasized.
Highlighting the roles of CSOs and NGOs towards a developed nation through tax payment, Johnannes charged Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) And Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) on creating awareness and mobilizing taxpayers through coalitions with other non-state actors on sub-national, national, or even international levels to improve the tax administration in Nigeria.
Furthermore, Mr. Femi Olarinde, TA to the Executive Chairman, FIRS who facilitated the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) And Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) on “Understanding Tax Administration In Nigeria and The Role of CSOs“, described tax as a compulsory financial charge or levy imposed on a taxpayer (individual or legal entity) by the government to fund public spending.
While noting that the government needs taxpayers’ money to continue to fund public institutions such as hospitals, railways, roads, and education among others, Olarinde charged CSOs and NGOs on facilitating participation in tax education and supporting demands for transparency and accountability and to always engage with state actors to enhance responsiveness to taxpayer concerns using collaborative approaches.
Olarinde also answered various questions from Journalists, CSOs, and NGOs after his lecture.
