MMA2 On Lockdown As Workers Protest

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport II (MMA2) was today shut by Aviation unions as they protest over sack of no fewer than 20 workers and non payment of salary.

It would be recalled that the affected unions had on October 5, issued a notice of strike which was jointly signed by the General Secretary of NUATE, Olayinka Abioye, General Secretary, ATSSSAN, Frances Akinjole and General Secretary, NAAPE, Ocheme Aba.

The striking unions are the National Union of Air Transport Employees, Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the National Association of Aircraft Pilot and Engineers.

They argued that the action became imperative sequel to the refusal of the BASL management to cooperate with the interventions of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and airport security agencies.

Accordingly, the striking unions insists that all services to MMA2 would be withdrawn effective October 10, unless the management fully reinstates all the affected workers without loss of pay or seniority.

They also advised the management to recognise the unions and allow the unhindered processes of unionisation in BASL in compliance with extant labour laws.
