Methodist Old Girls Association Holds Fundraising Walk, Plans Big For Annual Reunion

Methodist Girls’ High School Old Girls Association (MGHSOGA) ignored the rains on Saturday, September 8, to hold a 5-kilometre sponsored walk as part of its plan at raising funds for improved girls’ education for their Alma mater.

According to President of MGHSOGA, Mrs. Yomi Afolabi at a press conference after the walk held that the essence of the event is to raise awareness about the efforts of the association towards better girl-child education and improved school facilities.

“We have decided to give back to our alma mater, as a way of ensuring better girl child education and improved school facilities. Our desire is that the quality of education in our alma mater is not compromised in any way because of inadequate facilities; MGHS has been known over the years for tradition of excellence, high moral standards and discipline. That tradition must be upheld,” Afolabi added.

The main objective is to rebuild the structurally defective “old blocks” of classrooms so that the girls can access learning in a conducive environment. Hence, chairman of the fund raising committee, Mrs. Bunmi Morenike said they are soliciting for financial support from the public towards achieving these goals. She also emphasised that both old girls at home and abroad are working tirelessly to also raise funds through different activities.

Although, there are many benefits of walking as an exercise, however, explaining why walking was included in the fund raising activities despite other activities, Dr. Ronke Dawodu noted, “It is a sponsored walk, which means that we are getting friends, family and members of the public to raise funds for the building project with as little as possible. Most people think that when request for donations are made it has to be big money, but we are asking our prospective donors to donate towards each kilometre we walk at a minimum rate per kilometre. So someone could decide that he/she is sponsoring only 1km of our walk with 5k.”

This year’s annual reunion with the theme, ‘Back in the days’ holds on Saturday, October 27. The event which is organised by the centenary set is themed around music and events over the decades from the 1950s to the early 2000s.

The school which was founded in 1879 has produced many eminent Nigerians in different fields who have contributed greatly to the socio-economic development of Nigeria.
