Lookman made it to CAF’s top five for the Player of the Year award.
Glamtush reports that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday officially unveiled the top five nominees in each of the men’s categories of the upcoming CAF Awards 2024.
While Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman made it into the top five, his national team captain, William Troost-Ekong, could not make it out of the initial nine-man list.
The 2024 edition of the CAF Awards is set to take place in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 16.
Lookman scored a hat-trick for Atalanta in a 3-0 UEFA Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen last season and is favoured to win the award.
Those who made it into the top five include Simon Adingra (Cote d’Ivoire/Brighton & Hove Albion), Serhou Guirassy (Guinea/Borussia Dortmund), Achraf Hakimi (Morocco/Paris Saint-Germain), Ademola Lookman (Nigeria/Atalanta), and Ronwen Williams (South Africa/Mamelodi Sundowns) who have all been lined up for the CAF Awards 2024 Player of the Year Top Prize.
Other categories announced today include Goalkeeper of the Year, Interclub Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Young Player of the Year, Club of the Year, and National Team of the Year.
The glittering ceremony designed to celebrate African football excellence recognizes exceptional performances in both club and national competitions, culminating in the prestigious titles of CAF African Player of the Year in both the men’s and women’s categories.
A total of 7 categories have been confirmed by CAF in the Men’s Category of the awards, shortlisting the five top-performing players, coaches, and teams in each of the categories.
The CAF Awards 2024 cover the period between January 2024 and October 2024.
Lookman is the favourite to win the coveted Player of the Year prize following his outstanding performance last season and this season so far.
He scored three goals as Nigeria reached the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast and made history by scoring a hat-trick in the final of the 2024 UEFA Europa League, which helped his club lift the trophy at the expense of Bayer Leverkusen.
Nigerian striker, Victor Osimhen, was voted the 2023 Player of the Year after starring for Napoli. He has since been loaned to Galatasaray.
