Glamtushreports that Netflix’s new series, Monster, about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer has opened up a stomach-churning trend on the social media network, TikTok.
Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story has both broken records and sparked fierce controversy since its release last month, with many viewers accusing the biopic of being excessively gruesome and insensitive towards the murderer’s victims.
This online newspaper understands that people are looking up the real polaroids that were found in Jeffrey Dahmer’s drawer and posting their reactions to TikTok.
TikTokers are coming under fire after a new challenge called the ‘Jeffrey Dahmer polaroid challenge’ has gone viral on the platform.
Last month (Sep 21), Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story debuted on Netflix and immediately became the Number 1 show around the globe. The controversial limited series explores the murders of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer and the effect that his crimes had on his, predominantly Black, victims, and Evan Peters has been praised for his performance in the lead role.
However, Dahmer has also been called out for being insensitive to the families of Dahmer’s victims, and actual relatives of the people Dahmer killed have slammed the show for “re-traumatising” them and being made without their consent. Now, Dahmer is sparking further controversy after inspiring an offensive challenge involving Jeffrey Dahmer’s polaroids.
As shown in Dahmer, Jeffrey Dahmer dismembered his dead victims and took graphic polaroids of their body parts in sexual poses. It was these poses that led to Dahmer’s eventual arrest. When Tracy Edwards escaped Dahmer’s apartment in 1991, police investigated the premises and stumbled across incriminating polaroids in a drawer in Dahmer’s bedroom.
Following the release of the series, a challenge has gone viral on TikTok in which people search for the real polaroids online and then post their reactions to them. This has led multiple people to call out the TikTokers in question for using Dahmer’s victims as content. It has also led people to question why Dahmer’s polaroids are available for the public to look at.
Reacting to the trend, one person tweeted: “People on tiktok are upset because they couldn’t find the Polaroids Dahmer took of his victims???? What tf is wrong with people? I’m actually sick to my stomach right now.” Another added: “only tiktok would make it a trend to look at and post a reaction to looking at the jeffrey dahmer polaroids”.
Someone else also criticised the trend by tweeting: “idk why people are bragging about not feeling sick after watching the jeffrey dahmer film or seeing the real polaroids. like you should feel sick? theyre real people w real families like? be quirky about something else.”
As it stands, Dahmer’s polaroids have not been removed from the internet and TikTok are yet to comment on the challenge. We shall keep you posted with any further updates.
