Group Seeks Dapo Abiodun’s Intervention On PHAS Rector Post

A group has sought Dapo Abiodun’s intervention on the appointment of PHAS rector.

Glamtush reports that a group under the name Concerned Citizens, on Monday called on the Ogun state Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to intervene in the impending appointment of a new rector for the state’s Polytechnic of Health and Allied Sciences (PHAS), Ilese-Ijebu.

This online newspaper gathered that Matthew Olanipekun, convener of the group, said in a statement that the call was necessitated by a need to avoid the erosion of development at the institution.

According to Olanipekun, the latest appointment of a new rector for the polytechnic is deviating from following due process.

“It is our belief that appointing a rector with a requisite qualification will place the polytechnic on a global reckon as well as boost its public image. We also want the governor to request the polytechnic’s senate to follow the due process by appointing the most qualified among the three shortlisted candidates for the position,” the statement said.

“Subverting the most qualified candidate for the rectorship office may not augur well for the state’s first tertiary institution and a foremost specialised polytechnic in the country and this is why we are insisting that the due process must be allowed to prevail,” it also added.

The group alleged that a candidate with only master’s degree had been preferred by the polytechnic’s senate in disregard for an advert that the institution had earlier issued, in which it stated that only a candidate with a PhD would be considered for appointment.

Among the requirements for the rector’s position as advertised by the polytechnic’s Registrar, Abimbola Oyefesobi, include being “a highly qualified academic with a doctorate degree from a recognised institution in any of the following disciplines offered in the polytechnic sector such as health-related sciences, technology-applied sciences and environmental management.”
