Renowned Ghanaian chef, Ebenezer Smith, also known as Millennium Chef Smith, has been detained at the La Police Station for allegedly falsifying a Guinness World Record for marathon cooking by an individual.
Smith had presented a certificate claiming to be the new world record holder for cooking non-stop for 820 hours and 25 minutes, from February 1 to March 6.
However, Guinness World Records confirmed to BBC that the certificate was invalid and that Smith does not hold the title.
The current record holder is Alan Fisher from Ireland, who achieved a record time of 119 hours, 57 minutes, and 16 seconds in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from September 28 to October 3, 2023.
Smith’s arrest came after a sponsor, who donated approximately 350,000 cedis to support the cook-a-thon, discovered the fraud.
Smith had hosted a press conference at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, claiming to be the new record holder, and had also posted about his achievement on social media.
The incident has sparked controversy, with many questioning the authenticity of Smith’s claims.
