Climate Crisis Amplifies Gender Inequalities – Okuribido

As the world celebrates Women’s Day and Women’s history month, it’s time to roll out the drums, identify the gains, proffer solutions to the problems limiting them as well as chart a positive way forward.

For the President of Women in Renewable Energy, Chief (Mrs) Anita Nana Okuribido, women across the country need to explore the theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.”

According to the Renewable Energy expert Women In Renewable Energy Association, it’s time to come together and call for Climate Action for Women, by Women.”

Okuribido, who is also the President of Women In Renewable Energy ( WIRE-A) informed that women and girls experience the greatest impacts of the climate crisis as it amplifies existing gender inequalities and puts women’s lives and livelihoods at risk. Across the world, women and girls depend more on, yet have less access to, natural resources, and often bear a disproportionate responsibility for securing food, water, and fuel.

Okuribido adds that women are essential to leading and driving the desired change in climate adaptation, mitigation, and solutions across boards and must affect Energy Efficiency and play prominent roles in Energy Transition to achieve Net Zero Carbon Emission by 2050. Women and girls can start the green action late, stumble, fall down, make mistakes, sound different or be mocked and ridiculed but we must still reach the green finishing line by galvanizing and ready to energize the economy of Nigeria one green step at a time.
