Acknowledging that public outcry on rape allegations and financial excesses of some clergymen, especially on social media, is indeed a difficult time for the Church both in Nigeria and elsewhere, the Church Administrators Society of Nigeria (CASON) has sued for restraint and said that only strict adherence to righteous self-governance principles can save the Church.
In a media statement issued in Lagos, the President of CASON, Pastor Seyi Oladimeji, said “Churches in Nigeria are going through metamorphoses as their governing structures are also transitioning. All churches should, however, be self-regulated.
“The excesses of every pastor or church worker can be effectively anticipated, controlled and redressed by a board of trustees who are alive to their righteous duties of corporate governance. Their loyalty is first to the Holy Trinity and then to the laws of the land that registered the Church, and not just to the head pastor.
“Failure to self-regulate would always expose churches and church leaders to external regulations and probable criminal scrutiny both of which don’t augur well for the Christian work we are all called to do.
“While we continue to pray for both the accused clergy and their pained and hurting accusers concerning every church that may be in the court of social media outrage, CASON invites all pastors, church administrators and the general public to the CASON 2019 Annual Conference tagged ‘The Future of the Nigerian Church and the Church of the Future’ where self-governance precepts will be taught” Oladimeji said.
