Sunday Igboho is critically ill and has been rushed to hospital from prison.
Glamtush reports that popular Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo well known as Igboho, has been reportedly diagnosed with possible kidney or lungs illness.
This was disclosed by one of his lawyers, Yomi Aliyyu, in an interview with BBC Yoruba on Wednesday.
The lawyer revealed that Igboho developed the illness in Benin Republic prison custody, adding that the Yoruba secessionist leader has also been critically ill and rushed to the hospital for treatment.
Aliyyu further raised an alarm that Sunday Igboho needed urgent medical attention.
He said, “Igboho was not diagnosed with this sickness before he was arrested in Cotonou. It was so critical that they had to rush him to the hospital.
“I can’t tell if he has been returned to the prison from the hospital but what I know is, he’s battling ill health and it seems his kidney and lungs are already being affected.
“Even though I cannot tell which part of his body the sickness has really affected, I know it has to do with his internal organs,” the lawyer stated.
The latest development was also confirmed by sources in the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua.
“Yes, he is ill and his kidney appears affected. We are not very sure yet. Another test result is expected for confirmation. We are working on that and I can assure you that he is in safe hands,” one of the sources said.
When contacted, the spokesperson for Ilana Oodua, Maxwell Adeleye, added, “Expect our reaction soon. But the government should be warned that nothing must happen to Igboho.”
Glamtush recalls that Sunday Igboho, who is currently in a detention facility in the Benin Republic, was arrested alongside his wife on Monday, July 19, 2021, by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) at the Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, the Benin Republic while attempting to flee to Germany.
Sunday Igboho’s wife, Ropo, was later released after the court found out that she had not committed any offence.
On his part, the embattled Yoruba Nation agitator was returned to the custody of Brigade Criminelle in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
