Breaking: Akufo-Addo Re-elected As Ghana’s President

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo has been re-elected after a tightly contested presidential election, the country’s electoral commission announced Wednesday, beating long-time opponent John Mahama.

Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) received 6,730,413 or 51.59 percent of votes while Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) received 6,214,889 or 47.36 percent of votes, the commission’s chairperson Jean Adukwei Mensa said.

Akufo-Addo, who contested on the platform of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), won in eight of the 16 regions while Mr. Mahama won in the other eight.

Jean Mensah, the chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, said the final results were without that of Techiman South because it was being contested. She, however, added that the total votes in the constituency is 128,018 and will not change the outcome of the result.

By the power vested in me as the returning officer, it is my duty to announce Nana Akufo-Addo as the president-elect of Ghana, she said.

There was no representative of the NDC at the electoral commission headquarters.

Mahama, 62, and Akufo-Addo, 76, are old rivals who have faced off at the ballot box twice before.

Mahama was president for four years until 2016, before being succeeded by Akufo-Addo. Both of those elections were determined by small margins.
