Chukwuebuka Dikeocha, the blogger behind the ‘fake EFCC’ cell tweet, has been granted N1m bail.
Justice M.L Abubakar of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, ruled on the bail application of the defendant.
Dikeocha was arraigned by EFCC Port Harcourt’s zonal office on March 10, on a two-count charge, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Prior to the ruling, the lawyer to the defendant, C.C. Achunelo told the court that the motion presented was to seek the defendant’s bail application.
“We have before the court 11-paragraph affidavit and motion on notice filed on March 9, 2020. We urge the court to grant the defendant bail based on the motion”, he said.
Lawyer to the EFCC, M.T. Iko, however, did not oppose the bail application.
Iko said, “We are not opposing the application. All we are concerned about is the presence of the defendant to stand his trial.”
Justice Abubakar granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1m and a surety in like sum saying that the surety must be a civil servant on grade level 10 and must be verified by the prosecutor.
The matter was adjourned to April 7, for the commencement of trial.
