Slovak politician, anti-corruption lawyer and activist, Zuzana Čaputová, has been elected first female president-elect of Slovakia.
Caputova defeated Maros Sefcovic, a high profile diplomat and Slovakia’s EU commissioner who was also nominated by the governing party, 58% – 42%.
Zuzana Čaputová is a political newbie who’s anti-corruption campaign struck a chord in a country still grappling with the murder in February 2018 of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kusnirova.
The killings also motivated Caputova to run for office for the very first time, calling for an end to people “pulling the strings from behind (government).”
Čaputová is due to take office on June 15. She is also the youngest president in the history of Slovakia, at age 45.
