‘I’m The Head Of Nigerian Delegation,’ Tinubu Tells Obi, Fayemi At Vatican

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian newspapers.

1. The Federal Government on Friday said that it was monitoring the legal proceedings concerning Mr. Simon Njoku Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish citizen and prominent leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra. A statement issued by the Acting Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa confirmed the arrest and detention of Ekpa, who is wanted in Nigeria for terrorism.

2. The lead sponsor of the constitutional amendment bill for a six-year single tenure for the President and governors, Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP, Imo) has said that they will re-present the bill, which was rejected by the House at plenary on Thursday. In a statement in Abuja, Ugochinyere said that the decision on the floor of the House did not put an end to agitation and hoped that they would realize the objective.

3. President Bola Tinubu has sent a letter to the National Assembly, seeking confirmation of Lieutenant General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede’s appointment as the substantive Chief of Army Staff. In the letter sent on Friday, Tinubu said the request is by the provisions of Section 218(2) of the 1999 Constitution as amended and Section 18(1) of the Armed Forces Act.

4. President Bola Tinubu says his administration’s renewed focus on driving international and local investments into the livestock sector of the agricultural value-chain will end the crisis of farmer-herder clashes and promote economic prosperity. The President also agreed that there is hunger in the land but said hope is on the way with his administration’s commitment to developing the sector.

5. Senator representing Kebbi Central, Adamu Aliero, says the Nigerian military has finally flushed the terror group, known as Lakurawa, to the Niger Republic. In a statement on Friday in Abuja, Aliero said the development took place on Tuesday following interventions from the Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, Chief of Defence Staff, and other critical stakeholders.

6. Five Nigerian pastors and others residing in the Idabato II community of Cameroon, formerly known as the Bakassi Peninsula, have been arrested and detained by the Cameroonian authorities. Their detention followed the kidnap of the community’s Divisional Officer, Ewane Roland, by armed men in early October.

7. Dangote Petroleum Refinery says the Federal Government has not met its target to supply crude oil to the refinery under the naira-for-crude initiative. It said the amount of crude received from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited is “peanuts” compared to the volume needed to ramp the production of refined products.

8. Bandits reportedly attacked and kidnapped the village head of Ungwan Babangida, and 14 others in Kauru Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Thursday night. The youth leader of Dokan Karji, Aminu Khalid, confirmed the incident on Friday. According to him, the attackers invaded Ungwan Babangida Village at midnight with sophisticated weapons, shooting sporadically at vantage positions before whisking their victims away.

9. The Nigeria Customs Service, Operation Whirlwind Zone A, has said that the insecurity in Borno State has made it impossible for its operatives to effectively tackle smugglers of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly known as petrol. The National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind Zone A, Hussein Ejibunu, a Customs Area Controller, disclosed this on Friday in Ikeja while showcasing some seized kegs of PMS to journalists.

10. Electricity supply across the country, which has suffered severe hiccups in the last few weeks, is being further threatened following fresh attacks on transmission lines by vandals. Thirty-one transmission towers have been destroyed in the latest attack carried out by unknown vandals in Okada and Ofosu communities along the 330 kV Benin-Egbin and Benin-Omotosho transmission lines.
