Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers

1.Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Kano State, Lawan Musa has said the State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is ready to sign the death warrant of the convicted Islamic cleric, Sheikh Abduljabbar Nasiru Kabara. A Sharia Court earlier convicted the embattled cleric after finding him guilty of the charge of blasphemy levelled against him.

2. The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has said the commission has recovered more than N30 billion from the suspended Accountant-General of the Federation, Idris Ahmed. He said this Thursday while appearing at the Ministerial Briefing organised by the Presidential Communication Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

3.Travellers and motorists going to the South-East have expressed relief over the temporary opening of the second Niger Bridge. President Muhammadu Buhari, who opened the bridge yesterday for use during the festive season, counselled road users to drive safely and responsibly.

4. Men of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 49-year-old man, Ganiyu Shina, for allegedly bathing with blood at a community river in the Kotopo area of Odeda local government. The suspect was reportedly arrested on Thursday, at No 4, Oguji street, Obantoko Abeokuta.

5. Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has said it is closely monitoring the spending patterns of top politicians in order to forestall a situation where they would use funds to influence the electoral process. Chairman of the EFCC, Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa said the commission is being careful not to invite some of them for questioning in order not to be misconstrued as political witch-hunting.

6. The House of Representatives postponed the appearance of the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele to next week. The appearance was rescheduled on Thursday after Emefiele notified the lawmakers that he travelled with President Muhammadu Buhari to Washington.

7.Protesters, yesterday, barricaded the entrance of the National Assembly and called on lawmakers to support the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) cashless policy and currency redesign. The agitators under the umbrella of Initiatives for Patriotic Nigerians argued that the new policy would stabilise exchange rate and promote free and fair elections.

8. Nigeria’s inflation rate, which began its upward trajectory, was at 21.47 per cent in November, 2022, as against October rate of 21.09 per cent. In a statement obtained from the website of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the high food inflation rate in November 2022 was 24.13 per cent on a year-on-year basis, adding that the increases were caused by prices of bread and cereals, oil and fat, potatoes, yam and other tubers.

9. A former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has blamed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for his travails at the London Court. The Senator, who has been in custody in London over alleged organ harvesting, told the Abuja division of the Federal High Court that the anti-graft agency wrote a letter to the London court, which denied him bail.

10. The Department of State Services (DSS) has not given the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, his medication for nine days, and did not give him food yesterday, Thursday. This was made known by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, via a tweet on Thursday following his routine visit to the self-determination group’s leader at the DSS headquarters in Abuja.
