An Arizona mother died after her 5-year-old son shot her in the chest with a handgun, police say.
Michele Cox, 38, was shot in their family home in Casa Grande, just south of Phoenix, on Friday.
The mother of four was airlifted to the hospital after suffering a single gunshot wound to her chest but she later succumbed to her injuries.
Casa Grande Police said Cox’s four children, aged between 4 and 12 years, and her 40-year-old boyfriend were all home at the time.
None of them were injured during the incident, authorities said.
“Although this is an ongoing investigation, detectives have determined the victim’s 5-year-old son was responsible for the shooting,” a statement from police said.
“Currently, detectives believe this was an accidental shooting.”
A handgun was found at the scene.
Police noted the investigation was ongoing to “determine if any crime did occur.”
“This is a stark reminder that owning and safeguarding a firearm is a serious responsibility and should be a priority in anyone’s home or business, especially if children are present,” a police statement said.
